What is Nourishing Yin?
‘There are remarkable parallels between Yoga and Chinese yin-yang theory, the philosophy that health is a balance of complementary opposites: fire and water, mind and body, self and nature’. - Kenneth S. Cohen
Nourishing Yin comes from the philosophy of Chinese medicine which believes health is a balance of the qualities of Yin and Yang. Yang is considered as movement, activity and energy whereas Yin is quietness and stillness. We need both to be in balance with each other. In today’s environment we are constantly bombarded with activity, action, doing and achieving, there is very little time for true relaxation. Iyengar yoga and the modalities of Chinese medicine (acupuncture, massage, Qi Gong) offer a much needed opportunity to experience a sense of the stillness and quietness necessary to truly nourish yin.
